Ep 246 – Foot Strengthening for Plantar Fasciitis

Strengthening Your Foot For Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a condition where there is pain located at the bottom of the foot.  Most often those suffering from this have soreness when getting out of bed that takes a while to warm up.  In addition, those typically have very localized and focused pain that is intense and sharp.  Sometimes patients report it feels like a knife in their foot or a ripping sensation.

Plantar fasciitis is a type of tendonopathy, that is a type of degeneration of the fibers within the tendon.  This can occur from long periods of use, being overweight, and often times it is as a result of weakness within the intrinsic foot muscles (posture muscles).  When these muscles are weak (caused by poor foot wear and compressive shoes), it is much more likely that you will put strain onto tendons and other connective tissues that are not exactly designed for that type of fore.  The result is breakdown of that tissue.

This exercise is simple and allows you to start strengthening your foot, toes, and small muscles.  At the end of the day, foot strengthening is a requirement if you truly want to resolve foot and ankle pain cause by plantar fasciitis.
